
The Botswana Athletics team participated at the recent Senior Africa Championships in Durban, South Africa won five medals from 800m, 400m, 4 by 4 men relay team and long jump. Botswana National Sports Commission’s (BNSC) Bobby Gaseitsiwe has urged Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) to make sure that they look for races in July for athletes like 800m runner Boitumelo ‘Samachana’ Masilo to try their last chance at qualifying for the Olympics. Those who have qualified for Olympics, he said, they should put in more effort in training so that they can win medals for the country. “They still have to work hard. We might have had expectations that were not fulfilled but it is important you understand that does not mean you are not good enough,” he said. According to Gaseitsiwe, Government has made sure that they avail funds and resources well in time to make sure that they give the athletes whatever is necessary for them to do their best at the Olympics. “We expect a lot from you guys and that is why a competition has to be arranged for athletes like Samachana,” he added.
