The COSAFA Executive Committee had handed out fines and suspensions to members of the Botswana team at the recent COSAFA Castle Cup in Namibia, as well as those players and officials found guilty of age-cheating at the COSAFA Under-17 Championships. Botswana coach Peter Butler, and players Boitumelo Mafoko and Joel Mogorosi, have been handed two game suspensions from COSAFA competition matches for their conduct after the final whistle of the 3-2 COSAFA Castle Cup final defeat to South Africa in Windhoek in June. The Botswana Football Association were also fined US$3,500 for the conduct of the coach, players and Head of Delegation Jannie Sakaeyo, who stood accused of using abusive language towards referee Janny Sikazwe. The fine is payable by October 15, 2016. Should the BFA fail to do so they will be barred from competing at the COSAFA Under-20 Championships scheduled for South Africa’s North West province in December. Meanwhile, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) was banned from competing in COSAFA Youth tournaments for the next two years, from August 2016, though the sanction was suspended for a period of two years.
