Govt puts in P29m for Regional games

The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Thapelo Olopeng has revealed that Government has committed P29 million for the hosting of Region 5 Youth Games in December. This falls short of the P38 million budgeted for the games. The games will be hosted in Gaborone on December 7-16, 2018. He called on the private sector to come on board and partner with them. Mascom, Nashua, Cally Clothing, JB Sports, Limkokwing University, University of Botswana and Fairgrounds Holdings having already committed to supporting the games. Olopeng said Region 5 games promote peace, unity integration in the SADC region while encouraging people to develop and come together irrespective of colour, economic status, political class or gender. Region 5 youth games are for athletes who are under the age of 20 from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe with guests participants from Tanzania only in the male football. “The 2018 edition will feature athletics that will include the visually impaired, basketball, boxing, judo, netball, football swimming, tennis and volleyball,” Olopeng said.
