Botswana’s hopes of getting more than one medal at the on-going 2016 Rio Olympics were dashed after Karabo Sibanda finished fifth in the 400m final. Now the hopes are only on the 4 by 400m relay to bring back at least one medal from the games. Even though Sibanda did not manage to finish in the medal position his performance was exceptional as he broke his personal best time for the second time. He finished with a time of 44.25, an improvement from 44.47 seconds he set in the semi-finals. This performance made him the world’s second fastest 400m runner in the youth category. Sibanda is second to his countryman Baboloki Thebe whose time is 44.22 seconds. Thebe had an unfortunate spell in Brazil as he withdrew from the race due to injury. Meanwhile, South African Wayde van Niekerk made Africa proud by winning gold in the 400m, setting a new world record at 43.03 seconds.
