The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture Thapelo Olopeng has not taken lightly to the unfolding chaos at Botswana Premier League (BPL). Following allegations of mismanagement at BPL the league’s Chairperson and his Vice were recalled with the Chief Executive Officer and his Personal Assistant suspended. To show his seriousness Olopeng has since convened a meeting with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) and the Executive Committee of the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to establish what the issues are. It is reported that the minister wants to get to the bottom of the matter and intervene. The minister’s move has brought concern to some local sport lovers who fear that his intervention could put BFA in the wrong end of the world football governing body FIFA. FIFA is very clear that it does not want government interference in football. Any country that is found to be interfering in football matters is normally suspended from all FIFA activities. Olopeng, however, was reported saying he could not just seat down when things are not going well.
